The process of moving stirs my weaknesses to resound: These days complaining holds first place. Mostly, in my thoughts, often through sighs and moans, sometimes to God, and too often, to my very patient husband.
Sometimes I sound like our children when they were younger,
“Why do I have to …”
“I’m tired of …”
“I don’t wanna …”
The Apostle Paul prayed for change in his circumstance. Instead, the Lord showed him the path to be changed. “…’My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” (2 Corinthians 12.9)
God drenches us with his steady rain of GRACE—and sometimes he pours forth like a waterfall.
For almost 2 years, one of my fervent prayers has been, “Lord, change me.”
Lately, for every complaining thought I’ve entertained, God has met my heart with His GRACE.
Four days in a row, the realtor has called to schedule a showing, which translates, I need to go hide all the piles I’ve been working on AGAIN.
Then on a day when I’m about at my wits end, a son calls, “I’m praying for you, Momma. How are you doing?”
God’s GRACE washes over me.
Lists of to-do’s either keep me from falling asleep at night or wake me before the sun is up.
Another son texts, “I wish I could come home and help you, Mom. I’m praying.”
His GRACE washes over me.
Our daughter flies home with a semester’s worth of laundry the day before the move – and that’s actually okay … because OUR GIRL IS HOME!!
Jet-lagged and having not slept for 2 nights, she says, “How can I help?”
His GRACE washes over me.
Then the hardest part comes, farewell coffees or meals with friends. We laugh and reminisce. We share our hearts, as though we don’t own phones to stay in touch. Driving away each time, sadness and gratitude meet in my heart, and familiar tears–goodbye tears–flow. Lord, we didn’t have enough time.
His GRACE washes over me.
Holy God,
Thank you for loving us, even when we complain. You give us what we need, your grace and presence. Thank you for the many ways you reveal your grace. Thank you for Jesus. Help us recognize, receive and be changed by your GRACE. Amen.
